Campaign letter to BC's MLAs requesting legislative changes to the BC Residential Tenancy Act

Dear MLAs

I am a pet owner in BC and would like to request that you change the 
Residential Tenancy Act to include pets in all residential tenancies.

As you know, Ontario made the change so that pets can live with their loved ones in residential tenancies in 2021 and there has been no difficulties as a result at all.

I am requesting that you support the change of section 18(1) of the BC Residential Act to read as follows:

18   (1) A tenancy agreement may include terms or conditions to include pets.

(a) A provision in a tenancy agreement prohibiting the presence of animals 
in or about the residential complex is void;

(b) Domesticated animals are allowed in a residential tenancy in compliance with municipal bylaw requirements 
and restrictions.

The changes above would ensure that any provision limiting or forbidding pets in a Residential Tenancy Agreement would be void.

I also draw  your attention to the BC SPGA's (www.SPGA.ca) recent BC Animal Owner Survey which overwhelmingly showed that the pet public in BC which is over 50% of the population supports pet-friendly tenancies.

On January 15, 2024, British Columbia is made history with the first legislation 
of its kind in Canada that contains specific provisions dealing with pet custody disputes  
under the Family Law Act, S.B.C. 2011, c. 25. For this to be implimented, we need pet-friendly TENANCIES
for our beloved pets who we consider family.
