Dear ,

I am a pet owner in BC and would like to request that you change the Residential Tenancy Act to include pets in all residential tenancies. As you know, Ontario made the change so that pets can live with their loved ones in residential tenancies in 2021 and there has been no difficulties as a result at all.

As per the Make BC Pet-friendly campaign on the BC SPGA web site, www.SPGA.ca, I am requesting that you support the change of section 18(1) of the BC Residential Act to read as follows:

18 (1) A tenancy agreement may include terms or conditions to include pets.

(a) A provision in a tenancy agreement prohibiting the presence of animals in or about the residential complex is void;
(b) Domesticated animals are allowed in a residential tenancy in compliance with municipal bylaw requirements and restrictions.

You can read more about why there is a need for the above change on SPGA.ca/pet-friendly-tenancies-BC.html

On January 15, 2024, British Columbia is made history with the first legislation of its kind in Canada that contains specific provisions dealing with pet custody disputes under the Family Law Act, S.B.C. 2011, c. 25. If there is nowhere to live with animals this monumental initiative wont help most of us.

Animal surrenders are on the rise by 30% because of the lack of pet-friendly tenancies. It is unfair to us tenants and to our beloved furry family members.

Please email me with your support as soon as possible and thank you in advance for your immediate attention to this very important campaign that BC pet owners like me heartily endorse.

British Columbia is a big province and our pets need us to Speak Out for them.

Your help is needed to create an awareness and organize peaceful demonstrations in your area to make residential tenancies in BC Pet-friendly.

Make a difference for the animals. Wanted pets don't deserve to be surrendered or displaced from their loved ones. The animals are innocent and they are the victims of the non-pet residential tenancy crisis.
