BC SPGA makes headway in pet-friendly tenancies
In the recent 2024 provincial election Premier Eby's campaign platform conceded to "allowing pets in purpose-built rentals." Although a significant step in the right direction this is by no means the end of pet discrimination in BC residential tenancies. Join our campaign action today - be the change for homeless animals.
The BC SPGA pet-friendly residential tenancy campaign helped to make history with the B.C. NDP's promise to eliminate the No-Pets clause in rental units.
The Premier is showing support for pet guardians in British Columbia however there has been no action yet to accompany what Premier Eby refers to as “unfair discrimination” against pet owners in the rental market. The Premier also said that “Having a home should mean being able to include your beloved pets”.
Many of BC's young people are forced to choose between having a pet or living in compromised situations such as their cars. Seniors whose only companions are often a pet must make life choices to secure a rental that no elderly person should have to make. People with disabilities still cannot access rental housing because emotional therapy animals are not allowed.
The NDP’s proposed policy aims to ensure that landlords cannot deny housing to tenants with pets, allowing owners and pets to stay together in a more inclusive rental market.
The BC SPGA maintains that the pet public should pressure the Premier to keep his election promise.
A spokesperson for the BC SPGA said that "We still haven't seen this policy surface while the extreme lack of pet friendy housing is now the top reason for animal surrenders in British Columbia. This has resulted in more animals being euthanized or surrendered (and often euthanized) because there simply isn't room for them anywhere including most of BC's no-kill rescues which are struggling with over-crowded premises."
