With the extreme lack of pet-friendly tenancies, the unprecedented rental increases, and inflation highs exceeding all predictions it is little wonder that BC pet owners are facing challenges that are often insurmountable. The innocent victims are their pets.
The BC SPGA has undertaken the Make BC Pet-friendly campaign because the guardians of animals are the voices for their animals and those voices are not being heard.
The inflation rate in British Columbia reached a 40-year high in 2022.
In 2022, there were just 0.3 new housing units completed per new resident, the second-lowest ratio since 1996.
Though annual rent increases for existing tenants were capped at 1.5% in 2022, the average rental price increased nearly six times that rate.

BC animal guardians are further being tormented by the BC SPCA animal seizures that they are subject to where there is no protection and no rights. The helpless pet owners are faced with even further debt trying to get their beloved family furry member returned in expensive Tribunal and Court appeals that are rarely successful (see the outcomes of BC SPGA's research of BCFIRB animal custody appeals) or the BC SPCA costs which are listed often in the thousands of dollars which is out of reach for most people.
Many pet owners are forced to give up. They have no rights, no affordable tenancies, no protection and can't afford extra expenditures. It is devastating for the animal guardian and their pet to be forever seperated. The trauma and heart break that both experience is cruel and enduring.
Their pets face an even more cruel future. They will languish in kill shelters like the BC SPCA for awhile and be either euthanized or sold for profit. No-kill shelters are mostly over-crowded and the BC SPCA has raided and charged some of the reputable charities such as Dogway Dog Rescue, Healing Horses Sanctuary, Suzaku Sanctuary, Forgotton Felines, Epona Farm Animal Rescue and others tarnishing their otherwise stellar reputations in the eyes of the public.
The BC SPGA Guardian and Pets In Hardship program
The BC SPGA Guardian and Pets In Hardship program is the first of its kind and helps British Columbia guardians struggling to find pet-friendly accommodation, meet pet expenses or critical pet surgery costs. As well as referrals from our Working Together partnership with BC businesses pet products and services, BC SPGA actively fundraises to help animals in need.
The BC SPGA also works with community services that are receptive to helping struggling pet guardians and their pets.
Pets are the innocent victims of circumstances and challenges beyond their guardians control.
The need is great. Please consider a donation for the animals and their struggling family or loved one to the BC SPGA Guardian and Pets In Hardship program.
