With adoptions at an unprecedented increase at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic it was foreseeable that when life returned to normal there be animals no longer able to stay with their guardians.
British Columbia's rescues, shelters and sanctuaries began to face over crowding of animals and many pets were had to be turned away. The influx of animals also created a financial strain on no-kill shelters and rescues trying to keep up with the growing number of rescues in their care.
“So many people got dogs without knowing what they were getting into,” says Jesse Adams, founder of the Victoria-based Raincoast Dog Rescue Society . “They didn’t train them or look after them properly and now that they’re going back to work, they don’t have time for them anymore.”
The BC SPGA Rescue & Sanctuary Program helps NO-kill rescues struggling to meet the needs and strain of the many additional animals that ended up in their care. The program helps individual rescued animals in need of veterinary care or special needs animals that ordinarily would have been euthanized by others.
Meet Wilbur, the pot-bellied pig
Wilbur was rescued as a piglet in very poor condition by an Alberta rescue. When Wilbur's home fell through, a rescue in British Columbia took in the sick and malnourished piglet and raised him to adulthood. Wilbur was a therapy pig who thrived on meeting people and loved farm animals. When the rescue could no longer house Wilbur due to closure, the ownership of Wilbur was tranferred to a sanctuary.
Members of the BC SPGA society are glad to make donations so Wilbur lives the life every pig dreams of.
No-kill Shelters are a type of animal shelter with an anti-euthanasia policy for the animals they house. The most widely accepted definition of a no-kill shelter is a place where all adoptable and treatable animals are saved and where only unadoptable or non-rehabilitatable animals are euthanized. Humane societies and SPCAs often euthanize pets because they cannot find homes for them
