BC funded 4 new BC SPCA shelters to be built. Where are they
BC SPCA promised the construction of four new shelters.
The province provided a $12 million grant for that purpose.

What really happened with the $12 million for the construction of four new shelters?

On June 23, 2023 B.C. Premier David Eby made an announcement of a significant investment of a $12 million grant to the BC SPCA for the construction of four new shelters. Considering that animal surrenders were and continue to be at an all time high and the BC SPCA kills more animals in the Province than any other animal charity the announcement was welcomed by the animal community at the time.

Despite the promising announcement and the allocated funds, there has been a noticeable delay in the actual construction of these much needed four new BC SPCA shelter facilities.

The anticipation surrounding the promise of four new shelters has left many animal lovers and advocates wondering why the construction has not yet commenced, especially given the pressing need for improved animal care infrastructure.

Considering that the BC SPCA had a huge surplus of over $86 million at about that time some were wondering why the private charity was accepting such a large sum from the public purse however it was also believed that more shelters would help more surrendered animals.

The distribution of the funds were to be for a new shelter in Vancouver (receiving $7 million), a new facility in Prince George (receiving $3 million) and Fort St. John and Duncen received $1 million each to replace unsafe or aging shelters.

"Accountability is questionable at best. $12 million of public funds to a private charity with a surplus of millions of dollars is an expensive project at such a time of public need and that two years later the BC SPCA hasn't built any of the promised four new shelters with the funds is typical of their promises while the pet public continue to cope with enormous, rising costs and the smaller no-kill, over-crowded shelters are pushed out of the funding pool." A spokesperson for the BC SPGA said.

Four newly constructed BC SPCA shelter facilities could potentially provide care to thousands of pets or animals every year such as dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and rodents.
