Helping People With Pets In Need, Hope for Families: BC SPGA Cares with 'Guardian and Pets In Hardship’ Program

For Immediate Release

Date: November 28, 2025

VANCOUVER, BC – With the cost of living in the province one of the highest in the country, households with pets all over the province are struggling to keep up with the soaring expenses of veterinary services, pet food, and essential supplies.

The situation is further exacerbated by unforeseen costs like emergency vet visits or specialized treatments, which can quickly overwhelm families already on the brink, leading to immense guilt and helplessness.

The Society For British Columbia Public Guardians And Animals (BC SPGA), established in 2023, has become one of the vital lifelines for these families. Through its Guardian and Pets In Hardship Program, including facilitating access to low-cost veterinary services with providers, the BC SPGA aims to keep wanted pets with their families and loved ones.

"Our 'Guardian and Pets In Hardship Program' is one of our most requested and needed programs for the wellbeing of pets and their guardians in the Province," stated a spokesperson for the BC SPGA. "Sometimes it's just a helping hand with a pet's medicine costs or veterinary care that brings a smile to the children and their families."

However, the growing need for support has severely strained the BC SPGA's resources. "We are seeing a growing need for pet guardians in our province to receive help and support to meet the challenges of keeping pets. The BC SPGA helps guardians to manage in a crisis, however our financial reserves can’t keep up with demand," the spokesperson added, issuing an urgent plea for public support.

The BC SPGA is appealing to individuals and businesses to consider making a donation to help sustain its vital 'Guardian and Pets In Hardship Program'. Donations, regardless of size, directly impact the lives of pets and their families across British Columbia. The BC SPGA recognizes and honors those who help with a donation as a special rescuer, star, angel, or saint. Every member of the BC SPGA team is non-salaried and driven by a "big heart" for animals.
